AI Citation Tracking: know how often AI recommends you, and whether it’s growing

AI citation tracking measures every month how often AI engines mention and cite your brand for a fixed set of buyer questions, compared with your competitors.

A tool gives you a dashboard. We give you a prompt set built for your market, clean data, and a plain-English report on what moved and what to do about it.

On its own: priced on request. Included in every AI Search Retainer.

Why it matters

Why track AI visibility

You can’t improve what you only check by hand. And checking by hand misleads you: SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance that AI returns the same list of brands twice for the same question.

One screenshot of ChatGPT naming you, or not naming you, proves nothing. A share of voice measured across many runs of the same prompts, month after month, does.

Measurement is also the hardest part for most teams. In the SEOFOMO State of AI Search Optimization 2026 survey, reliably measuring AI visibility was the most common challenge practitioners named (19%).

Who it’s for

  • Brands already doing SEO or content work that want to know whether it shows up in AI answers.
  • In-house teams with an AI visibility tool nobody has time to set up properly or interpret.
  • Leadership teams that want one honest number on AI visibility each month.

Who it’s not for

  • Teams that want a daily ranking of “position in ChatGPT”. That number doesn’t hold still long enough to mean anything.
  • Anyone looking for tracking that proves revenue from AI. We show AI traffic and leads where your analytics allow it, and we’re clear where attribution stops.

FAQ

AI citation tracking FAQ

What is AI citation tracking?

AI citation tracking measures how often AI engines mention and cite your brand when people ask questions about your category. It uses a fixed set of prompts, runs them repeatedly across engines, and reports your share of voice and the sources AI cites, compared with competitors.

Why not just check ChatGPT ourselves?

Because a single check is noise. AI answers change from run to run, by user and by day. SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice. Tracking the same prompts across many runs is the only way to see a real trend.

What’s the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is when AI names your brand in the answer. A citation is when AI links to or lists your page as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being named. We track both, because they point to different fixes.

Which tools do you use?

A dedicated tracker for prompt-level data across AI engines, plus a second, independent index of AI answers and cited pages. We also use Google Search Console and your analytics for AI traffic. We choose tools by data quality and switch when a better one appears. You always see the raw data, so you can check our numbers.

How many prompts do we need?

Enough to cover your main services and buying questions, without padding the list. For most clients that’s around 30 prompts. More prompts cost more to run and don’t always tell you more.

Can we buy tracking without the rest of the retainer?

Yes. AI Citation Tracking is available on its own, priced on request. Many clients start here, see the gap, and then decide whether to act on it.

Does tracking improve our visibility?

No. Tracking measures; it doesn’t change what AI says. It tells you where you stand, which sources matter, and whether the work you’re doing (with us or anyone else) is moving the numbers.

The AI Visibility Audit sets the baseline that monthly tracking measures against. Already know your gap? Start tracking on its own.
